An incomplete Medieval lead alloy secular badge dating to the 15th century. The remaining section of the badge shows a heart with "hert be true" inscribed reading from one lobe of the heart up to the peak and back down to the other lobe. Attached to the left side of the heart is a thumb which is part of the hand from which the heart projected; the rest of the hand is broken and missing. On the reverse is the remains of the pin for attachment.

A very similar badge is published in Spencer (1990:117 no.223) which is dated to the 15th century. Spencer (ibid.) notes that more complete copies of this badge found elsewhere show that the hand is the hand of God and that there is a conflation of religious and personal sentiment.

Dimensions: length: 17.37mm; width: 14.46mm; thickness including the remains of the pin: 3.81mm; weight: 1.33g.
