An incomplete fragment of a cast copper alloy fitting of unknown function - possibly furniture related - of probable Roman date. The fitting is irregular in plan, cross section, and profile. It comprises a sub-rectangular socket (broken on three sides) that terminates in a irregular oval shaped knop. The lower broken edge of the socket has a large deep stepped rim. The artefact is heavily abraded and the patina is a worn polished greyish green colour (similar to that seen on a number of Roman artefacts from this area). A direct parallel has not been found but it is the recorders opinion that this is of Roman date.
The artefact measures 27.1mm length, 15.7mm wide, is 17.3mm thick and weighs 11.09 grams. The socket element is incomplete and measures 13.1mm x 15.7mm x 17.3mm. The side walls are 3.6mm thick. The knop projects 14.0mm from the socket and measures 10.2mm wide x 9.6mm thick.
