UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SF-F26FF4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete unidentified object. Made of cast copper-alloy it consists of a a circular ring, measuring 29mm in diameter, which has two pairs of opposite hinge loops. The ring is L-shaped in cross-section and the upper surface is decorated with two broad concentric grooves. There is also a white metal coating which has worn away between the grooves, giving a banded effect. Below this top surface the sides are cut away internally and a disc of lead has been set in (now very decayed and powdery). The lead was recessed, but flush with the reverse face of the disc. The opposite pairs of hinge loops are situated on the edge of the ring and also have decorative grooving and a white metal coating. Remains of iron hinge bars survive. The date and function of this object remain unknown, although it has been examined by curators of the British Museum they have not seen anything like it before either.
