Lead weight. Cast weight of 'cotton reel' form. The object comprises a pair of flattened spheres, of diameters circa 31mm and 32mm, with a narrowed waist of circa 20mm between them. It appears likely this served as a groove to facilitate tied attachment. Patinated overall.

Several similar weights have been recorded in association with Romano-British occupation debris from the East Yorkshire Wolds. Further examples come from Winterton, North Lincolnshire (NLM-A69C93) and Swinhope, Lincolnshire (NLM-E4BD18) where they are also associated with Roman finds. The object may have been intended to move or roll when in use, and in this it is not dissimilar to a crudely made sash weight. The mass of the object does not relate to metrical systems familiar to this reporter, so some other function may be indicated. Suggested date: Probably Roman, 40-400.

Thickness: 33.1mm, Weight: circa 200gms.
