A copper alloy Roman headstud brooch dating from AD 75 - 175. Only the head survives, and it is very worn and corroded. There is a vertical fin (pseudo forward hook) in the centre of the bow head, and below this an oval hollow with a rivet hole in the centre through which the separate head stud would have been attached. The bow has broken across the hollow and the break is patinated. The front of the wings are decorated with enamel, but only fragments of blue and possibly red survive and the original design is not visible. On the back of the head is a tubular housing for the axis bar. it is slotted for the hinged pin which does not survive. The brooch has a dusty bright green patina.
