SOCKETED AXEHEAD

Unique ID: PUBLIC-6C6D27

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete copper alloy socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. South Eastern Type.

The body is sub-rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in profile. Casting seams are present on both sides indicating a two piece mould. Most of the socket and securing loop are missing probably broken in antiquity as the broken edges have the same dark green patina as the surviving body. The socket has a double groove pattern around its circumference just below the lip. The blade, which is solid, flares out to a curved pronounced blade edge. Generally the overall thickness is approximately 2 mm, however, there is a slightly raised vertical fillet extending to 3.8 mm just inside the socket. Weight 44 grams. Overall length 63.4 mm. Body width 22 mm. Blade width 32 mm. Socket width would have been approximately 35 mm.
