Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper-alloy cup weight belonging to nested set (c. 1250-c. 1400 AD).
This weight is circular in plan. Its sides, 1.9mm thick and 7.6mm tall, flare evenly upwards from the base to a rim. The base is flat on the inside and outside. The inner and outer faces and rim are plain. Outer diameter of rim: 19.3mm; outer diameter of base: 16.5mm. Weight: 5.53g. (0.195 ounces).
According to Biggs (1992, 14-16) this type of weight was in use from the 12th century and throughout the medieval to post-medieval period although they were most common in the 17th-19th centuries. The earlier examples tend to have thicker sides and decorated rims and the plainness of this example suggest a post-medieval date. In the English Troy bullion weight system 5.53 grams would equate to about a third of a pennyworth, 8 grains. It is possible it has lost some weight due to corrosion and was originally half a pennyworth.
