An incomplete Late Roman to Early Early-Medieval copper alloy Type H variant penannular brooch, usually 4/5th to 7th century in date with flattened expanded terminals and missing its pin. It measures 26.87mm wide, 26.68mm long and max.2.66mm thick. Weighs 2.30g.
The frame is circular in cross-section and 2.66mm in diameter, flattening at the terminals to 1.67mm thick. The inside point of the triangular terminal extends a little way into the inside of the brooch. The metal is grey in colour and rather worn, and each terminal appears to have a circular indentation on each face.
Anna Booth comments: Fowler thought this brooch was a Type G, but Dickinson disagreed. I think it has similarities with some of the Type G penannulars, but is still best classified as a Type H variant. Compare with a brooch from Baginton, Dickinson 1982; fig.7, no.56 (article can be found at www.kdmdc.co.uk/resources_files/fowlers%20pennular%20brooches.pdf).
