A corroded Post Medieval cast copper alloy knife end cap (16th century AD). The cap is in the form of two symmetrical stylised horse's hooves, with the terminal ends flattened and in the form of horse shoes. Each half of the fitting is sub-oval in cross-section and curves throughout its length. On each shoe is a longitudinal groove with three small punched dots, one either side and one to the top of the groove, representing the frog and nails. Each shoe is delineated by a transverse groove. At the base a rectangular slot is filled with the remains of a corroded iron tang. A similar knife end cap is published and dated to about the 16th century AD by Read (2001, 88; ref: 652).
