BOW BROOCH

Unique ID: NMGW-A5D9D6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type, but stylistically probably of 2nd century AD date. The brooch is incomplete, missing the lower bow, the pin and the chain loop. The brooch utilised a hinge mechanism with a semi-tubular hinge type, where the tubes do not extend beyond the width of the bow. Above the head is a moulding before a panel which is likely to have incorporated the chain loop. The upper bow has concave sides and a decorative panel with cells for enamel with. The panel has two columns of chevrons separated by a central division and would have been enamelled both inside and outside the chevrons. Only one of the uppermost chevrons retains any enamel (dark blue). When the enamel cells were unfilled, the upper bow would have had a sub-triangular section. Beneath the panel is a double moulding before a button like device with a central horizontal rib and a hollowed reverse. The bow has broken beneath the horizontal rib. The bow has a comparatively shallow profile.

Notes:

The brooch has features similar to Trumpet (upper bow and 'button') and headstud (hinge type) brooches.
