Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 5, Group 2.a2, sprung pin, enamelled panel on upper bow, flat wing ends type). Also sharing characteristics of T-shaped and Wroxeter Types and probably dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is near complete, missing only the spring and pin. The spring was secured by means of a Polden Hill claw type mechanism and iron axis bar. The wings are plain except for expanded ends. The top of the brooch is flat with a sharp downturn, resembling some T-shaped brooches. The upper bow is of rectangular cross section and has two enamelled panels, probably containing alternating colours, similar to Wroxeter type brooches. Beneath the panels is a domed knop on each side and a raised central rib extending to the foot. The lower bow has a triangular cross section. The foot is oval and incorporates the base of the catch-plate.
Notes:
The brooch can be paralleled with Hattat's (1987) No. 905
