Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch of Roman date. Only the lower half of the bow, foot and catchplate survive, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The bow is rectangular in form and section with moulded decoration on the front face comprising two vertical flutes separated by a central vertical ridge. At the base of the bow is a double transverse groove separating it from the foot. The foot itself is flat, triangular in form and with a transverse ridge on its upper edge and a small projecting globular terminal knop. On its front face are traces of an added white metal coating, with decoration formed from a single, central vertical band of short transverse grooves. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate, which is flat, triangular in form and possibly missing its outer edge due to old breaks. The entire object measures 42.30mm in length, 10.18mm in width, 2.11mm in thickness and 2.93g in weight.

This is an incomplete Roman brooch of Hod Hill form. It finds parallels in examples published by Hattatt (1989: nos. 312, 855, 1499) and is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
