A silver hammered Scottish penny of Alexander II (1214-1249). The coin belongs to the Class II catagory and dates to 1235-1249. Mint is Roxburgh. Obverse shows an uncrowned bust of king facing left. Obverse legend reads ALEXANDER [RE]X. The reverse shows a double-stranded short cross (described in Calligas: 1999, page 48 as a 'voided short cross') with a 6-pointed star in each quarter. The reverse legend is ADA[ ] AND[REW] ON R for 'Adam and Andrew of Roxburgh.'
