A complete cast copper alloy buckle and buckle plate of medieval date. The buckle is a single looped D-shape with a circular section and narrowed and recessed strap bar. The buckle is undecorated and the pin no longer remains.
The plate is formed from a single sheet of metal, folded transversely over the strap bar of the buckle to form a hinged plate. Both the front and back plates are rectangular in plan and section though the back plate is smaller than the front. Two rivets are present at the attachment and can be seen on both sides. The front plate is decorated with an indistinct moulded design, probably zoomorphic in nature, and is gilt.
The metal has a dark greenish-brown patina andis worn. The buckle is 29.4mm long, 19.9mm wide, 3.5mm thick and weighs 4.7g.
