A large example of a complete but bent cast copper alloy strap end of the Early-medieval period. The strap end fits into Thomas's (2003) Class A, having a split end and zoomorphic terminal and central decorative panel. The narrowed terminal depicts a beast's head with snout and eyes and rounded ears, which are depicted as lying back on the head. Behind this is a large panel which would have once contained decoration but as this is now missing it is not possible to catagorise the type any further. The reverse end terminal consists of a simple split end of two lobes, each of which contains the rivet hole and rivet, both of which are intact in this example. Just below the rivet holes is an incised trilobate palmette. Some evidence of silvering is retained. This style of strap end was in popular use during the 9th century AD, and it is likely that its use spans a few decades either side of this date (Thomas 2003:2).
