Complete cast copper alloy figurine of Roman date. The figurine, which is of simple design with little detail, is a male figure facing forwards with the right arm bent up at a right angle and the left arm extended down and away from the left side of the torso. The legs are bowed outwards to the right and left forming a pronounced U-shape. The facial features of the figurine are not well-defined although traces of eyes and a nose are present. The figure is wearing a hat or headgear of uncertain design. The hat appears somewhat like a Phrygian cap but other examples of such figurines are known to wear crested helmets. Moulding around the waist and thighs of the figurine are also not readily identifiable and may represent shorts or a skirt-like item. The upper torso appears to be naked with hints of muscle definition on the back of the figurine around the shoulders. There are two integrally cast attachment prongs or tangs on the figurine. The first is square in section and projects down from between the legs measuring a total length of 19.8mm and 3.3mm x 3.4mm in section. The second, which is circular in section projects from the centre of the chest and measures 3.15mm in diameter and is just 3.24mm long (but this may not be complete).

The figurine was probably mounted on a horse, secured in place via the long attachment prong, perhaps with a shield attached to the chest via the smaller attachment prong and the raised arm carrying a spear or other weapon. Such figurines are known as Horse and Rider figurines and a suggestion as being made that some are intended to depict the god Mars with these examples being referred to as Equestrian Mars figurines.

See LIN-D53ED6 & BH-B0F961 for comparable finds.

Dated broadly to the whole British Roman period, c. 1-410 AD pending future research into the closer dating of such finds.
