CHAPE

Unique ID: NARC-A10757

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A chape formed of a sheet of copper alloy folded to form a hollow tube. The sheet overlaps at one side. Pressed to an almost closed point at one end. The open edge has V-shaped cut into it for decoration.

The chape is rectangular in cross-section. The copper alloy sheet is 0.8mm thick and was approximately 55mm in length before folding.

Reference: Read 2001, no.671 and 673. Read comments that styles and shapes being so similar, it is difficult to tell whether detached scabbard chapes belonged to swords or daggers.

Notes:

The weight is misleading due to soil inside.
