A silver denarius of Lepidus and Octavian, minted in Spring-Summer 42 BC in Italy, RRC: 495/2.

Obverse: LEPIDVS PONT MAX III V RPC, Bare head of Lepidus right

Reverse: CAESAR IMP III VIR RPC, Bare head of Octavian right.

Notes:

Marcus Aemilius Lepidus was part of the second triumvirate (or political alliance) of Octavian (C.Octavius) and Marc Antony (Marcus Antonius). This alliance eventually broke down and in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC Antony was killed. In 27 BC Octavian became Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome. Lepidus was allowed to remain as PONTIFEX MAXIMUS until his death in 12 BC.
