TOKEN

Unique ID: WAW-255DF2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Probable Post Medieval cast lead biface token. The token carries a stylised design of a spread-eagled bird looking right. The reverse has a symbol which is formed by a 6 pointed star made up of lines connected and above a '+' which is sat on an 'n' shape. The token measures 28.33mm diameter, 4.11mm thick and weighs 18g.

Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800.

This token has been dated broadly as probably Post Medieval c.1500-1800.
