An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval (1066-1500) two-piece swivel, consisting of one of probably originally two oval frames each with an oval cross-sectioned D-shaped loop ending in zoomorphic terminals attached to a circular loop in the centre (which retains a heavily corroded iron shaft).
The animal moulding is stylized and triangular in cross-section, with ridges for ears, brow ridge and snout. The mouth is clasping the circular loop through which the iron pin passes. Originally, the pin would have joined the loop to another similar loop allowing the two to swivel.
Such swivels were used on a range of strap fittings including animal leashes, hanging purses and sword belt fittings and were probably in use for the entire Medieval period. For a complete example see SUSS-580847.
