A complete cast copper alloy cup weight of medieval date. The weight is circular in plan with sides which taper from the top to the base giving a sub-trapezoidal profile. Around the top of the rim are a total of 20 punched ring and dot motifs and the rest of the object is undecorated.
The metal has a dark greenish-black patina and is worn. The cup weight is 24.5mm in diameter, 9.1mm tall, 3.1mm thick and weighs 14.1g.
This is most probably a single example from a nested set of differing sizes and weights which were used to weigh gold and silver in the form of coin, small objects or scrap metal or other precious materials.
Similar examples have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example; SF-5ACA17 and IOW-0A3577
