Cast copper alloy buckle dating to the Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period (c.575-625AD). The object is D-shaped in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The strap bar is narrowed and offset. It is circular in cross-section. The buckle frame is decorated with three grooves at each edge before the strap bar. On the rear of the buckle frame there is a single ring-and-dot decoration to one side of the strap bar. The pin which remains attached is a 'shield-on-tongue' type. The integral plate over the pin has a rounded end then a waist formed by two rounded cut-outs (opposite each other), then a rectangular lobe with a nick in each short projecting edge. On the underside of the plate is an integrally cast loop which projects from the rounded end. The loop is D-shaped in cross-section and tapers towards the underside of the pin where is terminates with a break. The shaft of the pin projects from the plate and widens slightly to where it down-curves before tapering towards a rounded terminal. The object has a light green patina and is corroded. Similar examples can be found on p203-204 MacGregor and Bolick, (1993).
