A fragment of a Neolithic flint axehead (3500 BC-2100 BC).
This fragment is the butt end of a slender axehead. It has been bi-facially knapped. In plan, the butt is semi-circular and the sides flare outwards and downwards towards an oblique break. However, the sides are almost parallel. In side view, it is sub-triangular, pointed at the top and is pointed-oval in cross-section. The arrises are sharp although most are not very pronounced.
The patination is grey with mottled off-white areas and has some iron staining, mainly along the arrises. The break is old and the colour of the patina on the break is similar to that on both faces.
This implement was probably a local product as flint is readily available in the Isle of Wight.
