BROOCH

Object type certainty: Certain

An unusual cast copper alloy brooch, probably dating from the Middle Iron Age. The brooch has a domed sub-lozenge shaped body, hollow on the underside, with four solid, domed knops at each outer upper and lower corner of the body. On the reverse is the remains of an integrally cast catchplate and pin hinge; the pin is missing. No direct comparison for this brooch can be found in the usual literature, although it is identical to one other brooch recorded on this database (BERK-8C4F34). The brooch does share similarities with Middle Iron Age brooches illustrated in Hattatt (2000: 287 no's 721,1444 and 1441), and four brooches with similar attributes are recorded on this database (see WAW-DD1642, BERK-4EFFC6, BERK-FSAF04 & BUC-3E10D0), forming a small corpus of what appears to be a style of brooch limited in distribution to Berkshire / Oxfordshire area. Should this brooch be a derivative of those depicted in Hattatt, then this brooch would date from c.5th to 3rd centuries BC.
