A fragment of a silver whistle. The circular chamber from the end of the whistle only. It comprises two hemispheres with flanged edges which have been soldered together. Both hemispheres are decorated with a cinquefoil with heart-shaped foils. Both hemispheres are dented. At one side is an oval aperture where the main body of the whistle would have been attached. The form is that of a Boatswains' whistle.
Date: Post Medieval - 17th century
Whistles of this type were used for signaling on ships.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
