BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: SF-93AF86

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A sheet copper alloy Post Medieval book clasp, 1550-1700 AD. It is complete but bent and folded, damaged whilst in the ground. It is a rectangular plate, the central section having indented edges. There is a ring and dot at the centre of the plate, and the upper surface is covered with tiny circular stamps. These are arranged in bands of two rows at each short edge and then randomly across the clasp. There are also tiny sun motif stamps, punched dots and rocker decoration. There is a curved hook at the centre of one short edge, and a curved hinge at the other which may contain the remains of a pin. The clasp measures 33.47mm in its present, compacted state, but is estimated to have been 35.9mm in length. It is 19.3mm in width and weighs 6.49g.
