A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel. It is the base of a small vessel such as a flask or beaker and it probably dates from 150 - 300 AD. The fabric is coarse and fairly soft. It is reduced and light grey in colour. The inclusions are generally very small. They include red and grey particles (grit?) and smaller pieces of quartz. The texture is fine, but the breaks are a little abraded. Only the base of the vessel survives. It is concave and has a diameter of 4.5cm. The side walls slope inwards to the break. Compare the flasks and beakers on page 8-12 of Gillam's "Types of Roman Coarse Pottery Vessels in Northern Britain".
