An incomplete Post Medieval cast lead Powder Flask cap, circa 1600 AD - 1700 AD. One of the integral loops that attached the cap to a bandolier is missing. The cap secured the mouth of a flask, that held a single charge of gunpowder for a Musket. Sometimes up to twelve such flasks were attached to a bandolier and were referred to as "Apostles". The images show the cap in its original as found condition, and also after restoration. It measures height 20.2mm, base diameter 19.02mm, and weight 25.2g. The diameter of the attachment loop is 8.7mm, and its perforation 2.5mm. It is in fair condition.
An illustration of a Musketeer complete with Bandolier and Apostles attached ,can be seen in Gordon Bailey's "Detector Finds 5", Greenlight Publishing 2002. pp22.
