AXEHEAD

Unique ID: YORYM-3ED4F4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete but unfinished axehead of probable Neolithic date. The axehead is ovate in plan, being narrower at the butt end than the cutting edge and is sub-rectangular in section. The right edge tapers smoothly from the ventral and dorsal surface to join in a sharp pointed edge while the left edge has not been so heavily worked and the two surfaces are joined by a wide right angled edge. Numerous flakes of differing sizes have been removed from the surface during the shaping process however large patches of cortex remaining suggest the shaping process was not completed, this is supported by the steep left hand edge. The butt end is largely smooth with much of the cortex remaining and the cutting edge is curved though broken and chipped.
The flint is a mid whitish-grey colour and has lighter inclusions. The axehead is 192mm long, 76.8mm wide, 36.2mm thick and weighs 629g.
