BLADE

Unique ID: HESH-288254

Object type certainty: Certain

A flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. The opposite end has been reworked to form a scraper and the long edge has also received some reworking but this is not as regular as that seen at the tip. The retouch on the tip is applied in neat regular rows on the dorsal face, whereas the retouch on the side is all applied from the ventral face. It is likely that this is a scraping and cutting tool. Two parallel vertical removals have been made on the edge of the unworked side of the blade creating a flat edge which makes use as a scraper more comfortable. The flint is a mid grey colour with a milky white coloured patina.

The blade measures 27.7mm in length, 13.0mm width, is 5.4mm thick and weighs 1.67 grams.
