A complete cast copper alloy Trumpet headed brooch of Roman date. The head is comprised of wide circular wings with a circular attachment loop projecting centrally from its top edge. The reverse of the head holds the lugs with axis bar around which the pin is fitted. From the head the bow tapers slightly to a raised collar below which is a circular knop with ring and dot design the central pellet of which shows traces of red enamel. Below the knop is a second collar from which a triangular bow extends. The bow is decorated with three large lozenge shaped cells each with traces of blue enamel. A rectangular area around these cells is also recessed but appears empty.
The catchplate extends from the reverse of the lower bow and is worn but complete.
The metal has a dark brownish-green patina and is in good condition. The brooch is 47.4mm long, 17.3mm wide, 8.9mm thick and weighs 7.4g.
A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattatt, p.329, fig.188, no.449 and are dated to the 2nd AD.
