An incomplete copper alloy buckle and plate of medieval date. The object is unusual as it has a rotating clasp for fastening rather than a pin. The buckle, plate and clasp are all separately made.
The frame is incomplete with only the strap bar and a short length of the frame to either side still remaining. The plate is rectangular with a centrally placed rectangular hole at which point it is fitted around the strap bar of the buckle. Two rivet holes are present on both ends of the open end of the plate and would have aided in attachment to a strap. The upper surface is decorated with incised rectangular elements with internal lozenge shapes and horizontal lines and traces of silvering remain. The rectangular clasp is fitted around the strap bar by a single loop of metal and is decorated with a double incised line.
The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The buckle is 36.9mm long, 13.8mm wide, 5.4mm thick and weighs 3.8g. A buckle with a similarly unusual pin, found nearby in Hull, can be found illustrated by Goodall (in Evans ed. 1993, 159; no. 130). See also SWYOR-FEB84C on this database.
