Copper alloy vessel spout. Cast and lightly facetted tube of thickness 1.7mm and external diameter 11.3mm with the naturalistically modelled head of a lion with jaws agape at one end, and a ribbed collar decorated with bordered Greek Key ornament at the other. A round aperture of diameter 4mm is set behind and between the teeth. The muzzle, eyes, teeth, mane and ears are crisply modelled, even within the mouth, as is the key ornament at the other end. This piece is probably from a metropolitan (i.e. Gaulish or Italian/ Roman) workshop, as is indicated by the quality of modelling, the naturalistic rendition of the beast, and the competent execution of decorative motifs which would mean little to a provincial craftsmen. This object may have been designed to fit to a wineskin, where the collared end could ensure a seal. It is also in excellent condition, with only a single tooth having been lost from the lion's jaws. It is considered a Find of Note: the circumstances in which such a fine piece arrived at its find-spot would be of considerable interest. Suggested date: Roman, 43-400.
