SEAL

Unique ID: YORYM-E8A4B7

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete cast lead Russian bale seal of early modern date. The seal is circular in plan with worn edges and a roughly rectangular cross section. It is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by a hole running across its diameter. The holes would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag.
Stamped text can be seen on both sides of the seal though much on one side is now illegible
The obverse is stamped with four lines of text reading:

AR//[--]POK[---]//[--]KO[--]//[----] (the letter K is in retrograde).

This text represents the initials and surname of the Quality Control Officer and possibly a code for the location at which the Officer worked or the registered number of the sealing tongs he used.

The reverse of the seal is stamped with a further three lines of text reading:

*NP*//[-]HIOH//1785

Denoting the place of export, and the remaining text most probably denotes the producer of the goods with 1785 being the year of production. The stamps are a mixture of Roman and Cyrillic scripts.
The metal is a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The seal is 23.8mm in diameter, 6.9mm thick and weighs 17.9g.
