A copper alloy loop from a swivel type of strap fitting dating from the Medieval period. It consists of one of originally two oval frames, each with a loop ending in zoomorphic terminals attached to a hollowed flattened hemispherical centre. The hollow area would have held a corresponding rivet projecting from the other half.
The animal moulding is very worn. The mouth clasps the flattened-hemispherical centrepiece.
Such swivels were used on a range of strap fittings including animal leashes, hanging purses and sword belt fittings and were probably in use for the entire Medieval period. For a complete example cf. SUSS-580847. See also WILT-9963C6 and DENO-7E3E56.
