Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a dark brown piece of flint. It is sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple flaking. It is asymmetrical in shape with the point and both barbs being damaged. Much of this damage has happened relatively recently. The arrowhead has been worked bi-facially; both the sides (ventral and dorsal) of the arrowhead have been retouched to create sharp edges. Both the left and right long edges of the arrowhead have received secondary reworking and a large number of retouch scars are present. The arrowhead has neat regular pressure flaking over the entire surface and shows a high level of skill.
The body of the arrowhead shows neat and regular thinning flakes - these are most prevalent at the thickest point - above the tang. The quality of the flint is relatively poor and there are a number of hinge fractures present. Hinge fractures are formed where the force of the blow has not travelled evenly through the flint or where the force meets a flaw or fracture. Barbed and Tanged arrowheads are relatively rare site finds in the Marches, they are often smaller in size when compared other regions, this is usually thought to be caused by the small quantities of good quality flint available. The flint that is available locally is mostly derived from glacial or riverine deposits and the quality of these sources is poor. This arrowhead is similar to the group described as Sutton (example e) in Butler ( p163) '. The reason for comparing this type with the arrowhead in question is the very broad sub-triangular plan with the small sub-rectangular shaped tapering tang.
The arrowhead measures 16.3 mm in length, 18.1 mm maximum width, and is 4.2mm thick. It weighs 1.4 grams. The tang of the arrowhead is 4.8mm long and 6.41mm wide.
