A cast copper-alloy finger ring of probable Medieval date. It is missing its setting, but is otherwise complete. The hoop is oval shaped in section and expands to a sub-triangular bezel. There are three circular recesses within the oval bezel, presumably to hold either paste or a setting, the setting is missing.
This form of 'Stirrup-Shaped' finger ring is noted by Egan and Pritchard as being popular in England from the mid-12th century for several hundred years, although perhaps only fashionable until the mid-13th century (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: pp. 326-327). A similar example preserving the cabochon setting is noted from Medieval London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 1609). This suggests a date for the current example in the 12th-15th centuries AD.
