Post Medieval Irish copper alloy 'gun money' shilling of James II (1685-1691 AD), mint unknown (gun money was produced in Dublin and Limerick). Dated 1690 on reverse. Weight: 5.1g. Diameter: 22.94mm.
Gun money was issued by the forces of James II during the Williamite War in Ireland between 1689 and 1691. The token money was made from scrap metal, including old cannon and bells, with the intention of being redeemed for silver once James II had succeeded in recovering the English throne. The token coins were never redeemed as James lost the war.
