A clipped silver penny of Edward IV - 1st Reign Heavy Coinage struck at the mint in Durham - Class 4 similar to North 1544 with a central rose on the reverse and an additional pellet in the first quarter.
Paul Withers - Galata Coins - comments:
Coins of Edward IV are struck on very small flans or they have been clipped. This is almost a feature you can use to recognise them. Secondly on this one has been struck from 'locally made dies' which mean that they are a little oddly made. The die engraver was a bit short on tools and used the same punch for both R and N thus causing further confusion. There is further confusion because the reverse reading is CIVITAS - according to Sod's Law this bit, the part that you don't need, is nice and clear, whilst the rest of it is tantalisingly detrited or missing. It does, however, read something like Don (R) /O[LMIN] - or something similar. Incidentally this is a very nice specimen, despite the nasty crack !
Thanks are extended to Paul for his expertise, time and help in the identification of this coin. Thanks are also extended to Rob Webley and Laura Burnett (FLOs) for additional information on the identification of this coin
