A cast copper-alloy Roman plate brooch inlaid with enamel, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin (c. 2nd century AD). The brooch is in the form of an elongated stylised palm leaf which curves to one side at its tip. From the centre of the wide end a stalk emerges which ends in an expanded terminal (W.: 9.75mm). Within the main field, just above the stalk is an annulet inlaid with red enamel. The main field is inlaid with blue enamel, now cracked and crazed, but surviving well. Both the border and the annulet are decorated with fine punch marks. The lower surface is flat, except for the pin lug and catch-plate, located at either ends of a low longitudinal strip. The pin lug is located at the start of the stalk, slightly to one side. Within a double lug are the corroded remains of the iron axis bar. The catch-plate, towards the tip, has a length of 6.5mm and a width of 1.4mm. It is broadly trapezoidal and the fold has been abraded. This brooch has a mid/dark-green patina with some areas of lighter corrosion product. It has been bent downwards at the tip as a result of old damage. The form is seemingly a rare one, difficult to parallel in the main literature, but as ref. BUC-415350 on this database.
