A relatively small strap handle from a medieval 'splash' glazed jug of probable later medieval (1200-1400) date. The handle is incomplete and there is no evidence of the body extant on the fragment. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, and dull brown ironstone(?) inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The colour of the fabric is a mid buff white with evidence for a mid grey (reduced) inner core. The outer surface is glazed with a series of very pale yellowish green splashes. The handle has also been decorated with a series of small irregular slashes which have been probably applied with the tip of a bladed knife. The slashes are arranged in a diagonal pattern and positioned within that irregularly within two groves which descend down the middle of the handle. Not enough of the fragment survives to suggest the size or form of the vessel. From the style of decoration, fabric and glaze it is possible that this is from the kilns at Worcester.
The sherd measures: 70.3mm in length, 39.2mm max. width, is 31.3mm thick at the junction between handle and body, the handle at the broken edge is 13.7mm thick. It weighs 45.58 grams.
