Description: Gold posy ring with a D-shaped hoop. Inscribed on the inside is "Hearts content cannot repent". When engraved hearts was misspelt as heats, the engraver realising their mistake added a small 'r' above the a and t.
Notes:
Discussion: The style of the lettering is consistent with 17th century rings of this type. Posy rings were also used as love tokens, with the inscription remaining secret to all but the wearer.
See posy ring in the British Museum collections, AF.1266, for an example of this inscription (Hearts content canot repent) dated 17th -18th century.
Joan Evans notes that this inscription is recorded in the 17th century but in the absence of a datable maker's mark we cannot confirm that this posy ring is pre-1712
