Cast copper alloy vessel escutcheon or mount in the form of a bird’s head. The escutcheon has a lower flat panel representing the breast of the bird and decorated with incised diagonal lines meeting at a central vertical line, beneath each of the diagonal lines are a row of chevrons to indicate the feathers. At the top of the panel is a circular drilled hole, possibly to hold a handle. The top of the perforation corresponds to the level of a step in the mount, presumably to house the vessel rim. The top of the mount is in the form of a pointed bird’s head with incised oval-shaped eyes. The top of the head is flat with a rounded profile and has eroded, but seems to have been decorated with a similar motif to the panel. There is a slight overhang on both sides of the top. The rear of the flat panel is tinned or silvered, presumably the remnants of solder to secure the mount.

Notes:

It has proved difficult to find parallels for this escutcheon, the amount of Roman material recovered from the area would seem to make a Roman date possible.
