A silver-gilt coin brooch made from a gros-tournois of Louis IX of France, minted between 1266 and 1270. There was a considerable vogue for coin jewellery in the second half of the 13th century. The adaptation of the coin into a piece of jewellery, whether it be a pendant or a brooch, is generally considered to occur relatively close to the date of minting. A date of around 1300 would seem sensible for this brooch.
