A post-Medieval Irish copper-alloy 'gun money' sixpence of James II (1685-1691 AD), dated 1689 on coin and minted at Dublin or Limerick. Spink: 6583B.
Obverse: IACOBVS . II.-DEI . GRATIA; Laureate and draped bust left
Reverse: 1689 . MAG . BR . FRA . ET . HIB . REX; Crown with two sceptres crossed behind, in each quarter VI//I/R//July (VI = denomination)

These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
