A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl, possibly dating from the Early Medieval period. It is circular in plan with straight sides making is rectangular in section. The central perforation has a diameter of 9mm and there is no internal cavity in the wall of the perforation. One face is decorated with moulded raised ribs in groups of three forming fan like motifs, radiating from the perforation to the outside edge.
Lead alloy spindle whorls are very difficult to date, but the shape of this example matches Coppergate type B1 which was found in 5th century deposits onwards (Walton Rogers 2007). It could also be Medieval, but Medieval examples tend to be plano-convex where this has flat faces.
