Copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch. The expanded head terminates in two D-shaped flanges which are now incomplete but would have been pierced to carry the pin axis. There is a raised moulding between the flanges which is pierced to take the pin axis. Five transverse engraved lines on the head. Arched bow which tapers from top to bottom which is convex in cross-section at the front and flat at the reverse. There is a single incised transverse line on the upper bow, two on the lower bow and a further three lines at the junction of the bow and foot. The foot expands out very slightly (width 6mm) and the end curves forwards, with three incised lines immediately above it. The pin is missing, but the deep catchplate (7.5mm) with the end curved back almost towards the foot is complete. Even, dark green patina. Length: 37.5 mm, width: 26.5 mm, weight: 8.11g.
Supporting-arm brooches were divided into two types by Böhme (1974), summarised in English by Evison (1977), based on the width of the head; this example belongs to the Mahndorf type (head width 25-30mm). They date to the early or mid 5th century.
