BUCKLE

Unique ID: LEIC-AE8085

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Late Roman to early Early medieval cast copper alloy military belt buckle fragment of Hawkes and Dunning Type IB. The object consists of part of the buckle frame, in the form of two dolphin meeting mouth to mouth, with two horses' heads emerging from the backs of the dolphins. The buckle was produced in an open cast, and C-shaped scale details were then punched onto the bodies of the fish and a row of Cs representing a dorsal fin onto the base of the horse heads. The same punch may have used to mark the horses' eyes. The marks of rough filing are visible on the reverse. This fragment would have been the part of the frame furthest from the bar, incorporating the pin rest. The rest of the frame is missing due to old breaks. It has a dark brown smooth patina, with a few small spots of orange or light green corrosion.

The fragment is 28mm long, 23mm wide, 4mm thick and weighs 4.79g.
