Cast decorated shell fragment from the hilt of a small sword or dagger, probably of 18th century date. The shell is decorated in a neo-classical style with a repeated design on both faces, consisting of a raised outer border around a central panel. The border is decorated with floral scrolls interrupted at the centre of the outside edge with a human face each side of a reclining figure holding a staff or bow. The central panel has a floral design radiating from the central aperture. The sides of the panel have floral or vine scrolls around a central reclining female figure. The shell is gently concave in profile.
