Description: Two silver groats of Edward IV.

1) Groat, Edward IV, First Reign, Light Coinage, London mint, type 7 (July 1466-July 1477), initial mark crown/crown

Obverse legend: ...DWARD...

Obverse: Crowned bust, facing. Quatrefoils to either side of neck

Reverse legend: POSVI...V...E MEV // CIVITAS LOnDOn

Reverse: Cross. Three pellets in each angle

Initial mark: Crown/Crown

Diameter: 25.94mm

Weight: 2.55g (incomplete)

2) Groat, Edward IV, First Reign, Light Coinage, York mint, type 8b (July 1467-July 1468), initial mark lis

Obverse legend: ...A.REX.A...AnG

Obverse: Crowned bust, facing. Quatrefoil to either side of bust; E on breast

Reverse LEGEND: DIV...E MEV M // CIVIT [ ] EB[O] RACI

Reverse: Cross. Three pellets in each angle

Diameter: c.25.98mm

Weight: 1.98g (incomplete and in three pieces)

Discussion:

The two coins are the highest denomination silver coins then in use, the fourpenny groat; they were issued within a relatively short time period and would have been in currency together. Although in damaged state now, they seem to originally have been in good condition. They were found in close proximity. Given this, it seems likely that they may have formed all or part of a single deposit and that therefore the find fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act (1996)
